Flywheel and Clutch Options
There are a few different configurations that can be assembled for clutch and flywheel:
Mustang II Flywheel and Clutch
This configuration is the most straight forward because everything is stock hardware.
The Mustang II with the 2.8L and RAD/SR4 4 speed manual transmission has the correct spline to match the T5 transmission. Unfortunately, the Mustang flywheel is a bit harder to come source.
Ranger/Bronco II/Aerostar Flywheel - Custom clutch disk
The flywheel for the Ranger/Bronco II is approximately 3/8" smaller in diameter than the Mustang II flywheel, which means that the clutch disk is not compatible between the two applications. One of the major differences between the Mustang II and the Ranger/Bronco applications is the transmission and clutch disk for the Ranger/Bronco used a different input shaft spline.
The minor consequences of this are that you need to have a custom clutch disk made to match. Most clutch shops can easily use the center hub that matches the T5 input spline and install it on the standard disk for the 2.8L Ranger/Bronco II.
Since the Ranger/Bronco application is much more available, this will become a much more popular configuration for the V6 alpine conversion.
A custom clutch can be fabricated for the Ranger flywheel and purchased from Phoenix Friction:
- Phoenix Friction #NCD 1228D - CD: New 8-7/8” x 1-1/16” 10 tooth spline - Late
- Cost is approximately $75
The throw-out bearing is #N1714SA - Release Bearing Assembly: Ford $32.42
