At some point in the production, Ford went from the small distributor cap to the larger version to reduce the potential of ignition crossfire due to ozone build up inside the cap.
MSD Performance identifies this and recommends drilling two vent holes in the small cap:
"On vehicles with smaller caps, it is possible for the air inside the cap to become electrically charged causing crossfire which can result in misfire. This can be prevented by drilling a couple vent holes in the cap. The holes should be placed between the terminals, at rotor height and face away from the intake. If your environment demands it, place a small piece of screen over the hole to act as a filter."
If you would rather convert to the larger distributor, you can easily do so by purchasing the following components to upgrade. One of the advantages of doing this the availability of suitable plug wires for the MSD 6AL2. Personal experience left me with less desirable options than adding the adapter and upgrading the distributor cap & rotor. Should you choose to not upgrade, It may be possible to order terminals to fit the small distributor cap, but the 8mm MSD wires weren't stocked at my local parts house in that configuration.

The MSD6AL makes a great enhancement to overall performance over the stock ignition control module by offering a REV limiter and dual spark duration up to 20° to 3000 RPM helps to more effectively use fuel. I mounted mine behind the glove box inside the passenger compartment to keep it from the heat of the engine bay.
Connection is as easy as the stock configuration, however depending on your tachometer setup you may need additional parts.
